What is the best oil? When recommending the best oil for 3.5 ecoboost I’ve taken the following factors into account:

  • Power Output
  • Gear Shifting
  • CO₂ Emission
  • Mileage
  • Seasonality

More on the factors later. Now let’s put the different oil brands under scrutiny and get the best of them.

To get your ecoboost engine to operate at optimal levels, you will need to choose the right type of oil and maintain proper oil change interval. Engine oil is crucial to your machine as it helps it run smoothly, which prevents engine failure.

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) classifies oil under two categories; the type and the grade. There are three types of motor oil:

  1. Conventional/organic motor oil
  2. Synthetic blend motor oil
  3. Fully synthetic motor oil

Motor oil is also classified according to viscosity, the degree of resistance to flow that the oil offers. There are two grades of motor oil:

  1. Monograde oils are oils formulated to operate at one temperature. E.g. SAE 20, 30, 40 etc.
  2. Multigrade motor oils have two distinct flows, one for cold weather and one for hot weather.

Motorcraft 5w-30 motor oil is the best oil for 3.5 Ecoboost. It is manufactured by ford motor oils. It ensures less friction, which means minor engine wear and higher mileage. A blended additive enhances engine performance and smoother gear shifting. It has Magnesium and calcium detergent, which reduces engine deposits and cloud clogs. Works well in both low and high temperatures. Its downside is it comes at a high price.

10/10My Rating
  • It has a high viscosity index
  • Additives protect the engine from wear
  • Reduced fuel consumption
  • Requires caution while changing oil

Ford recommends this as 3.5 ecoboost synthetic oil. Its friction technology will protect your engine from wear. Its high viscosity index makes it suitable to use in extreme weather conditions. As a result, you will have easy startup during cold weather and heat protection during hot weather. Read Motorcraft oil reviews here.

The base oils flow freely throughout the engine, evenly coating its parts to protect it from rust and corrosion. Synthetic oil change is a bit tricky. Be sure to dispose of it correctly and avoid spills as it is highly non-biodegradable. Motorcraft 5w30 synthetic blend oil change interval is 5000 miles or 6 months whichever comes first.

Amsoil formulates its signature series oils to provide the highest level of performance and engine damage protection. Developed with cutting-edge technology, it guarantees optimal performance and protects against wear over longer oil drain intervals.

  • Longer drain intervals than conventional oils
  • Enhances fuel economy by burning fuel completely
  • Protects the engine and improves efficiency
  • Additives could precipitate and separate from oil in extreme cold weather

I recommend using this oil because the benefits outweigh the cons by far. When you use Amsoil synthetic oil, it flows smoothly, enabling all engine parts to work seamlessly, improving the engine’s efficiency, and burns fuel completely. As a result, your vehicle will consume less gasoline, saving you money.

Look out for stratification of the detergents during cold weather, making them separate from the oil.

For high-stress vehicles operating with the ford 3.5 Ecoboost engine, I recommend this oil since it is formulated with special additives to keep the ford engine at top-notch performance levels giving you value for your money.

Valvoline synthetic oils are designed in clear solid color, making it easier to know when the oil starts getting dirty. It’s expensive because it is fully synthetic oil. See why most people praise it here.

Castrol is one of the best oil brands. Castrol synthetics oils are formulated for extreme temperatures and loads. They have been designed to minimize breakdowns due to heat and enable effortless startups during cold weather. For an improved user experience, this oil is designed to protect the metal on metal friction, reducing wear and prolonging the engine’s life.

  • Reduces friction by decreasing metal on metal contact
  • It has a unique blend of detergents that protects against sludge and deposits
  • Reasonably priced as compared with other top brands
  • Contributes to engine’s knocking issues
  • Slows down engines performance

Castrol edge ensures that all valves are free from deposits using a unique blend of detergents. This increases the engine’s performance and power output. It is also reasonably priced as opposed to other fully synthetic oils. Compare castrol with others here.

This oil could cause premature combustion, which produces sharp pinging noises from your engine. You can solve this by getting a cam phaser lockout kit. You may consider Pennzoil Platinum for low performance issues. Here’s my in depth comparison of Castrol Edge and Pennzoil Platinum.

Of all the engine oils in this list, the Havoline high mileage synthetic blend oil is the most interesting. I recommend it for older machines that have high mileage. It reverses damage to your engine. If you have a fairly used ford 3.5 Ecoboost engine truck, you should give it a try.

  • Repairs oil leaks and reverse damages to the engine
  • It also minimizes further oil leaks
  • Has deposit shield which minimizes deposits
  • It is relatively affordable compared to other top-range high mileage oils
  • It is packaged in a light plastic bottle resulting low shelf life

The Havoline 5W-30 High Mileage Synthetic Blend Oil not only protects your engine from deposits and oil spills but also eliminates those that have already formed. This oil comes highly recommended by customers and experts alike.

The only issue with this oil is the packaging. Be cautious during transit as it comes in a light plastic bottle which could is susceptible to breaking. Compare havoline vs valvoline here.

The ford 3.5 Ecoboost gasoline engines are Smaller yet powerful and efficient direct injection engine that offers high mileage and low CO2 emission. The engine is also known as ford cyclone engine.

The direct double injection means that fuel is added directly into the cylinder, allowing you to control the amount of gas goes into each cylinder. This reduces the amount of energy for every combustion cycle.

Turbocharging uses exhaust gases to push air into the engine. This gas flows through the exhaust manifold to turn the pinwheel, which connects via a shaft to a pinwheel on the intake side, spins the fan allowing it to suck more air from the outside, pushing it into the engine.

A factory tuned well maintained high mileage ecoboost engine can serve you up to 250,000 miles or 402,000 kilometers. With regular servicing and no major aftermarket modification, you can drive more miles on your f150 high mileage ecoboost.

While picking the best oil for trucks, you must consider the following:

Power Output

Synthetic SAE 5W-30 oil has a low viscosity which means it flows easily in your engine. Synthetic oils also offer more lubrication to your car than conventional oils, reducing friction and increasing your car’s horsepower.

Read my guide on 5w-30 Vs. 5w-20 here.

Gear Shifting

Synthetic SAE 5W-30 has a low viscosity which provides low resistance ensuring all parts move smoothly, enabling smooth gear shifting.

Read my guide on why car f150 starts but won’t stay running here.

CO₂ Emission

Low viscosity oils such as SAW 5W-30 decrease the internal friction, which leads to less power usage, reduced fuel consumption, and reduced carbon emissions.

Do you know wrong antifreeze coolant can contribute in CO2 emission too? Read my post on antifreeze coolant here.

Most motor vehicle manufacturers recommend SAW 5w-30 oil because it protects the engine even in high mileage vehicles such as trucks. Since it prevents damage from friction and corrosion, it enhances the durability of the machine.

Here’s why your car doesn’t start after getting gas.

Since 5W-30 oil is multi-grade oil, you can use it in all seasons. It accommodates a wide range of temperatures, so you do not have to keep changing it as the season changes.

Several issues arise when using motor oil for the ford 3.5 Ecoboost engine. I am going to be discussing some of these problems and how to solve them at home.

Too Much Engine Oil

Too much oil can cause severe damage to your engine. A few millimeters above the ‘high’ line will not affect your vehicle. However, it should never exceed a centimeter above the optimal level.

Signs of excess oil are oil leaks in the engine and blue smoke from your exhaust. Too much engine oil can cause severe damage. The extra oil can spill towards the crankshaft, mixing it with air as it rotates, making it foamy. Foamy oil does not lubricate well, which could lead to wear.

Fixing this problem is very easy. All you need is a SAE approved 14mm wrench and a clean container. Using the wrench, loosen the drain bolt and slowly drain the oil. It would be best if you kept checking the levels until they got to the optimal level.

Do you know why your oil pressure is low at idle? Here’s my quick fix.

Engine Oil Leaks

Worn-out engine gaskets, missing oil pan drain plug, improper seals, and spills from the oil pan can cause oil leaks ranging from few drops to large leaks requiring costly repairs.

To determine whether you have oil leaks, use the dipstick; if the oil is below the lower optimal level, you need to check on possible avenues for the oil leak.

If a loose drain bolt causes the leak, get under your car and tighten it to the specifications in your manual.

For leaks occurring due to faulty gaskets, use engine oil stop leak. It will safely stop any leaks in your engine. Details here.

Here’s my guide on common oil leaks and DIY fix.

Low Oil Pressure

High oil pressure is required to ensure oil flows smoothly to every part of the engine. Reduced oil pressure could lead to the metal on metal contact, which damages your engine. The leading causes are; reduced oil levels, faulty bearings, dirty oil pumps, the wrong oil viscosity, among other reasons.

One way to fix low pressure is by choosing the recommended viscosity of oil and changing the oil at recommended intervals. You shouldn’t use 5W20 oil instead of 5W30 for your 3.5 ecoboost, that will cause problems.

Curious about how much did the car salesman make out of your car? Here’s my experience.

3.5 ecoboost oil capacity is 6 quarts or 5.7 liters, that includes the oil filter too. 3.5 ecoboost oil capacity is lower than 5 liter f150 models. For example, 2018 f150 oil capacity is 8.8 quarts or 8.3 liters.

Since the Ford OEM best 5w30 oil come in 1 quarts container, you need at least 6 of these to refill. See packing details here.

Wrap Up

What’s the best oil for 3.5 ecoboost? The OEM recommended grade is 5w30 and ford uses Motorcraft SAE 5w30 synthetic oil in their garage.

Engine oil is to the engine what the heart is to the body. Your choice of engine oil will determine how long and how efficiently your engine will run.
