What is the best oil? When recommending the best oil for 3.5 ecoboost I’ve taken the following factors into account:
- Power Output
- Gear Shifting
- CO₂ Emission
- Mileage
- Seasonality
More on the factors later. Now let’s put the different oil brands under scrutiny and get the best of them.
To get your ecoboost engine to operate at optimal levels, you will need to choose the right type of oil and maintain proper oil change interval. Engine oil is crucial to your machine as it helps it run smoothly, which prevents engine failure.
Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) classifies oil under two categories; the type and the grade. There are three types of motor oil:
- Conventional/organic motor oil
- Synthetic blend motor oil
- Fully synthetic motor oil
Motor oil is also classified according to viscosity, the degree of resistance to flow that the oil offers. There are two grades of motor oil:
- Monograde oils are oils formulated to operate at one temperature. E.g. SAE 20, 30, 40 etc.
- Multigrade motor oils have two distinct flows, one for cold weather and one for hot weather.
Motorcraft SAE 5W30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil
Motorcraft 5w-30 motor oil is the best oil for 3.5 Ecoboost. It is manufactured by ford motor oils. It ensures less friction, which means minor engine wear and higher mileage. A blended additive enhances engine performance and smoother gear shifting. It has Magnesium and calcium detergent, which reduces engine deposits and cloud clogs. Works well in both low and high temperatures. Its downside is it comes at a high price.
- It has a high viscosity index
- Additives protect the engine from wear
- Reduced fuel consumption
- Requires caution while changing oil
Ford recommends this as 3.5 ecoboost synthetic oil. Its friction technology will protect your engine from wear. Its high viscosity index makes it suitable to use in extreme weather conditions. As a result, you will have easy startup during cold weather and heat protection during hot weather. Read Motorcraft oil reviews here.
The base oils flow freely throughout the engine, evenly coating its parts to protect it from rust and corrosion. Synthetic oil change is a bit tricky. Be sure to dispose of it correctly and avoid spills as it is highly non-biodegradable. Motorcraft 5w30 synthetic blend oil change interval is 5000 miles or 6 months whichever comes first.
AMSOIL Signature Series 5W-30 Motor Oil
Amsoil formulates its signature series oils to provide the highest level of performance and engine damage protection. Developed with cutting-edge technology, it guarantees optimal performance and protects against wear over longer oil drain intervals.

The Havoline 5W-30 High Mileage Synthetic Blend Oil not only protects your engine from deposits and oil spills but also eliminates those that have already formed. This oil comes highly recommended by customers and experts alike.
The only issue with this oil is the packaging. Be cautious during transit as it comes in a light plastic bottle which could is susceptible to breaking. Compare havoline vs valvoline here.
How Does The Ford 3.5 Ecoboost Engine Work?
The ford 3.5 Ecoboost gasoline engines are Smaller yet powerful and efficient direct injection engine that offers high mileage and low CO2 emission. The engine is also known as ford cyclone engine.
The direct double injection means that fuel is added directly into the cylinder, allowing you to control the amount of gas goes into each cylinder. This reduces the amount of energy for every combustion cycle.
Turbocharging uses exhaust gases to push air into the engine. This gas flows through the exhaust manifold to turn the pinwheel, which connects via a shaft to a pinwheel on the intake side, spins the fan allowing it to suck more air from the outside, pushing it into the engine.
A factory tuned well maintained high mileage ecoboost engine can serve you up to 250,000 miles or 402,000 kilometers. With regular servicing and no major aftermarket modification, you can drive more miles on your f150 high mileage ecoboost.

Ford 3.5 Ecoboost Engine Oil Issues And Easy DIY Fixes
Several issues arise when using motor oil for the ford 3.5 Ecoboost engine. I am going to be discussing some of these problems and how to solve them at home.
Too Much Engine Oil
Too much oil can cause severe damage to your engine. A few millimeters above the ‘high’ line will not affect your vehicle. However, it should never exceed a centimeter above the optimal level.
Signs of excess oil are oil leaks in the engine and blue smoke from your exhaust. Too much engine oil can cause severe damage. The extra oil can spill towards the crankshaft, mixing it with air as it rotates, making it foamy. Foamy oil does not lubricate well, which could lead to wear.
Fixing this problem is very easy. All you need is a SAE approved 14mm wrench and a clean container. Using the wrench, loosen the drain bolt and slowly drain the oil. It would be best if you kept checking the levels until they got to the optimal level.
Do you know why your oil pressure is low at idle? Here’s my quick fix.
Engine Oil Leaks
Worn-out engine gaskets, missing oil pan drain plug, improper seals, and spills from the oil pan can cause oil leaks ranging from few drops to large leaks requiring costly repairs.
To determine whether you have oil leaks, use the dipstick; if the oil is below the lower optimal level, you need to check on possible avenues for the oil leak.
If a loose drain bolt causes the leak, get under your car and tighten it to the specifications in your manual.
For leaks occurring due to faulty gaskets, use engine oil stop leak. It will safely stop any leaks in your engine. Details here.
Here’s my guide on common oil leaks and DIY fix.
Low Oil Pressure
High oil pressure is required to ensure oil flows smoothly to every part of the engine. Reduced oil pressure could lead to the metal on metal contact, which damages your engine. The leading causes are; reduced oil levels, faulty bearings, dirty oil pumps, the wrong oil viscosity, among other reasons.
One way to fix low pressure is by choosing the recommended viscosity of oil and changing the oil at recommended intervals. You shouldn’t use 5W20 oil instead of 5W30 for your 3.5 ecoboost, that will cause problems.
